Georgia & George's Werribee Mansion Wedding

A trip to Paris, and an afternoon in the clipped green formality of the Jardin du Luxembourg, shaped everything about Georgia and George's spring wedding. They found that same feeling in Victoria, in the courtyard of The Refectory at Werribee Mansion, and filled it with 140 guests, burgundy and silver, and a great deal of joy. We were there from the quiet of the morning to the last plate broken on the dance floor.

The Day

Having married in a religious service the week before, Georgia and George wanted this ceremony to be personal: their story, and vows they had written for each other. It was held among the trees of Werribee Park with the mansion rising behind them, led by celebrant Andrew Redman, and their cocker spaniel Oscar carried the rings.

Afterwards we took them inside for portraits on the 1870s staircase, all deep red runner and lamp-bearing bronze figures, then out to the sandstone facade and lawns. Back with their guests, George set a coupe-glass champagne tower flowing, and the bridesmaids, in deep chocolate brown, had their own moment with the couple.

They had always wanted to celebrate outdoors, then rain came in the evening. Their coordinator, Edina of ES Events Planning, had a marquee up at the last minute, and the night carried on beneath it to the sound of rain on the roof. Inside were three long tables and no bridal table, so the couple could dine among their guests, with Blonde Florals arrangements and a five-tier baroque buttercream cake that Georgia made herself through her own label, Georgia Eats Cake. A traditional zaffe with Lebanese drummers brought them in, and the dancing never stopped.

Photo spots at Werribee Mansion

  • Werribee Park's trees. A ceremony under mature canopy, with the mansion framed behind the couple.

  • The 1870s staircase. The red runner, carved balustrade and bronze lamp figures; we photographed Georgia here in colour and in black and white.

  • The sandstone facade and tower. Italianate stonework that gives portraits a European feel.

  • The Refectory courtyard. Bluestone walls that hold their character by candlelight, marquee or not.

Tips for couples marrying at Werribee Mansion

  • Plan an outdoor reception with a wet-weather option ready; Melbourne spring can change by evening.

  • Set aside a few quiet minutes to see your reception space together before guests arrive.

  • Let your pets and traditions in. Oscar and the zaffe were two of the day's best moments.

In their words: "It genuinely felt like they were there with us not just as vendors, but as people who truly cared about the moments unfolding around them." Georgia & George
